I love little miss Malea. She belongs to one of my very best friends, Miriam, and we always have the BEST time and the best results with her when we take photos. Malea is so cute. She LOVES chapstick, her wagon, animals, and dressing herself in boots during mid-summer. She looks just like her mommy when she was a wee tot--dark hair and bright blue eyes. My husband is into cars--he has a Jeep that he likes to continually upgrade and fix up. We visited a pick and pull lot to see if they had parts that would work in his Jeep, and along the way, I took some photos. I heard some of my photographer friends say that at any given point, you should be able to see a photograph within 10 or so feet of where you're standing, so I often like to make the best of it.

I haven't written about my new camera boyfriend yet. It's a Mamiya. Mamiya RB67. Totally manual, totally film, and I totally love it.

Mine's a bit more ghetto though because I don't have a strap. So I think my left bicep is much bigger than my right nowadays because I balance it on my left hand. Did I mention it weighs approximately a million pounds and is a monster of a camera?

And yet. I love it.

I've shot most of my recent work on it--yes, even my work with kids--and I have to say, I love the fact that it gives me total control of every shot.

That, and I really like my newly huge left bicep, I guess.

Any ideas for names? (Oh, ps, I like to name my stuff. Yep, I'm a weirdo.)

Earlier this year, I decided to do a project on kids; I think they're my favorite subject to photograph. I have more coming, but this cute little guy is Easton--I photographed him before (which you can see here). He's grown up so much!

My goal with this project is to really capture the essence of childhood, cheesy as that sounds, and who the individual child is. For Easton's photos, he liked giving his dinos baths, throwing rocks in the bushes, tossing tissues, jumping on the bed, and wearing his pj's over his regular clothes.

I have more coming like this. It's been a really fun project; that said, if you or someone you know might be interested in something like this, and have kids ages 2-6ish, send me an email! I still have a few spots available.

Back in August, we went to Sun Valley for a soccer tournament. That was the weekend we adopted Bert, and we took him there to see if he'd be a good fit for us. I guess it worked out because we still have him.... Anyway, Sun Valley is so gorgeous. The weather was beautiful, there was a lot to see, and we even found some hot springs. I got really sunburned (as usual) and we found a bar which had awesome burgers. More to come from Sun Valley!

They had several art installations going on at Santa Monica Pier while we were there; you can see one in the top photo, which was a lifeguard stand spewing bubbles and shining green lights. It was all part of a visiting artist series/thing called Glow. There were a ton of a people there, and yet, it was still really cool to be at the beach at night. I think I'm a California girl at heart.

Here's a post from a photographer friend, because she said it better than I could.

"There is NEVER A GOOD TIME to get your photos taken.

You are busy.

You want to lose that last 5, 10, 15, 20 lbs.

Your hair isn't right.

There just isn't time.

The kids won't cooperate.

There's no money.

Oh, I have all these excuses and more. And I'm a photographer.

But believe me, you need to.

All the time you're stalling, the kids are growing.

You are aging (gracefully I'm sure).

The moments are passing.

And that's what it's all about, the moments are passing.

That newborn isn't a newborn anymore.

He's in high school (how the heck did that happen?).

And you are never going to be as young again as you are today.

I have only one photo of me breastfeeding a baby. And I had four babies, breastfed for a total of 5 years, and have one photo. But I cherish it. It brings me right back to that time and place.

And that is important.

...it doesn't need to be perfect. Sometimes real is best.

I adore this photo above of MY MOM with MY KIDS and my dog.

Oh, I know they aren't all perfectly smiling for the camera. (although my mom has that copy).

But....

Does my son cry? YES.

Do my girls fool around constantly? YES.

Is the dog crazy? YES.

Is my high-schooler a teenager? YES.

It's all captured so perfectly. A snapshot of a real moment in my real life.

This shoot is my big sister's cute family. I love them all so much! These were taken in the fall in Logan.

I have an announcement to make that I've been sitting on and pondering about for a little while. I'm so excited to tell you that a & g will now be adding wee shoots to the business plan as well!

What are wee shoots?

Wee shoots are smaller sessions for about half the cost. For a killer price, you'll get a wee shoot; it's half the cost for half the products and services of a regular shoot. I'm really excited about this addition as wee shoots are perfect for newborns, babies and kids, or even family shoots (because it can be so difficult to get kids to stay happy and focused for long).

The pricing for wee shoots is as follows:

Family photos : $155
Kids, babies, etc. (individuals) : $100

They'll come with a disc of 15 photos from the shoot which will print up to 5x7.

Pricing change

I know you're all probably sick of hearing about this (so am I!), but I thought I'd let you know that I've made a few changes to my pricing.

Due to the fact that the photography market is extremely competitive right now, I've actually lowered my prices. I find that I can offer as many discounts as I want, but they're not as effective as having a solid product at a really reasonable price. So, I've lowered all of them for now. If you're interested in a session, as always, contact me! This new pricing is still configured for my re-discovered love of film. Also, because I like getting work, I think this change is for the better.

Previously, I didn't include discs with photo packages, but after a little research, I've learned more about small business taxes, and it makes more sense to include them. That, among a few other things, is the reason behind this change. You can check it out here if you're interested.

And a sidenote: these prices are actually pretty killer deals, but not QUITE as killer as my summer deal of $65 for nearly any session (except wedding day photos). You have until tomorrow to speak up, or forever hold your peace.

This was my first session entirely in film. I'm really excited about it because I think they turned out great--plus I love these guys. They're my nieces and nephews, and so fun to photograph. I love photographing kids--especially if I tell them to pull a funny face. It's so fun to see what they come up with....

Summer deal!

From now until July 24th, if you book a session with me for $65 (that's pretty much at cost--especially with film!), then refer a friend, you can get a disc of your photos for FREE.

I've recently decided to shoot more film, and I thought I should explain why.

First, shooting film means I know my stuff. I know how exposure works, I know how to manually use my camera, and I know how film will react to light. Secondly, film is better looking than digital with a lot less work, which means you get quality results much more quickly than if I were shooting only digital. Third, I love film. It's what I learned on when my love affair with photography began; I love the suspense of finding out what it'll look like after being developed, and I love staying in the moment during shoots instead of checking my LCD screen to be sure I got the shot. With film, I know I've got the shot. You'll get a better variety of shots, because unlike digital, I can't and don't shoot the same shots over and over--which, truthfully, can be a waste of time when one frame will suffice and capture the moment (and with film, I can be sure I got the shot the first time--no second-guessing).

Lastly, I shoot film because it makes me feel like the best version of my photographer self. I shoot it because so many others have taken up photography, and shooting film makes it feel like it's back to being a little more "mine." Plus, how cool is it to shoot the analog way? I think it's pretty cool.

Truth be told, this deal is better for you than for me--shooting at cost doesn't really make me money, obviously--but because I'd like to share the film love, I'm offering this deal. Don't forget--it only lasts until July 24th, but you can book ahead as far as September (or even October... I'm nice!). The only exception is wedding day photos. Contact me for pricing on those, but I'm willing to negotiate a deal for those, too.

Lastly, don't forget to take advantage of this to update your family photos, photos of your kids, get your engagements or bridals--just don't forget to refer a friend to me, and you'll get a disc of all the photos from your session free. He's really into peace signs lately; that, and not smiling for photos. But I caught a little one in this last photo. He and his little sister, Hailey were playing games together (the paper above). They were making little wire sculptures, and on the paper he wrote both, then Hailey, meaning he voted once that both won the contest, then Hailey. They have fun contests together and sleepovers in the basement. They're also both a lot of fun to have around.

Also, happy birthday Hailey. I love you!

I like buildings. This last one is of a loft apartment in downtown Salt Lake--we thought it looked really rad, so I tried to get a photo of it. A tall-ceiling-ed, centrally located and spatially open urban apartment in Salt Lake? Yes, please.

I love Salt Lake. It feels sort of big city-ish, but also, not really. Maybe someday I'll live there--for now, I'll just visit and dream.

We went on a walk around a neighborhood with our dog one night. It was kind of nice--we picked somewhere we know but don't live by, drove there, and walked around.

It's interesting to look at the differences between digital and film... See the last soccer game (the photos of my feet until the last ones) here, shot on my digital camera. There are several photos which I took with both cameras to see the differences... kind of fun to see. Yep, still love film. I also love my husband and watching him play soccer.
